He ...received his Master of Divinity degree from Naropa University and practiced Zen Buddhism under the instruction of Gerry Shishin Wick, Roshi at the Great Mountain Zen Center in Boulder, Co. Richard completed a residency in Clinical Pastoral Education at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, WI and served as Hospice Chaplain before being called into prison Chaplaincy. While serving as a prison Chaplain, a deep sense of kinship was awakened between Richard and members of the Northwest Native community. Richard was welcomed into the healing ceremonies of the Natives due to his advocacy for and participation in these spiritual practices. This prompted him to reconnect with his own native heritage and to be initiated as a Shaman by Taino elder Miguel Sague. Richard lives in Oregon with his wife, two children, and German shepherd and is currently developing rites of passage for young men.
